The Cassa per la Circolazione Monetaria della Somalia was a currency authority established under the Italian Trusteeship Administration — the ten-year UN-supervised arrangement that ran from 1950 to 1960, granting Italy responsibility for guiding the former colony toward independence. This note was printed in Rome for a territory Italy had lost after the war and only recovered administratively through diplomatic negotiation at the 1949 Paris Peace Conference. The Somalo, the currency this note belongs to, replaced the East African shilling and was pegged to the Italian lira at 6 Somali to 1 lira.
Three signature combinations are recorded for P#15, reflecting changes in the Cassa's directorship across the decade-long trusteeship period. Inserra replaced Spinelli at some point in the run — which combination appears on a given note is the easiest way to roughly bracket its issue date within the series.
