Issued to mark twenty-five years of the Head of State Malietoa Tanumafili II, who had held office since Samoan independence in 1962 and would go on to become the longest-serving head of state in the world at the time of his death in 2007. The 100 Tala denomination was purely ceremonial — Samoa had no gold coinage in general circulation, and these were produced exclusively for collectors and diplomatic presentation.
Fr#3 places this among only a handful of Frassinet-listed Samoan gold issues, reflecting just how limited the country's gold striking program was in the 1970s.
