Reverse description A large central intaglio vignette reproduces the historical painting 'O Regresso de Diogo Cão – Beja 1489,' illustrating the explorer Diogo Cão presenting Congolese natives before the Portuguese court. The scene is set within an elaborately engraved border with guilloche ornaments; an oval blank reserve panel occupies the right side, and denomination numerals '1000' appear at all four corners. The caption 'O REGRESSO DE DIOGO CÃO – BEJA 1489' is inscribed below the central vignette, with the printer's imprint 'THOMAS DE LA RUE & COY LTD LONDRES INGLATERRA' at the foot.
