The Banque d'Emission du Rwanda et du Burundi was a transitional institution, created to manage the currency of two newly independent states that had not yet established separate central banks. It issued notes from 1960 until Rwanda and Burundi each launched their own national banks — Rwanda's Banque Nationale in 1964, Burundi's Banque du Royaume in 1964 as well. This 1000 Franc note sits at the very end of the joint authority's operational life.
Thomas De La Rue produced the series from London, as they did for much of Francophone Africa during the post-independence transition years. The 1964 date on this denomination makes it among the last issues before the shared currency arrangement formally dissolved.
