The Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale — BEAC — replaced the earlier BCEAEC structure in 1972 following a reorganization of the Central African monetary union. Gabon, as a member state, issued notes under the BEAC umbrella with country-specific letter codes and overprints distinguishing circulation zones; a Gabonese note was not legal tender in Cameroon or Chad, even though the francs were nominally identical in value. The arrangement required careful stock management by member central banks and created a parallel system of note invalidation whenever a country's allocation changed.
The Banque de France printed the series throughout its decade-long run, a relationship rooted in the CFA franc's structural ties to Paris.
