Guinea's 1998 series marked a quiet consolidation after the country had cycled through several currency resets since independence, the Syli having been abolished and the Franc reinstated in 1985. By the late 1990s, the Banque Centrale was working with Oberthur Fiduciaire — a French security printer with deep roots in West African currency production — on a series intended to modernize the circulating stock without a full denominational overhaul.

The watermark remains the sole listed security feature, modest even by the standards of the period. High-denomination notes in active circulation in Guinea's cash-heavy economy wore quickly, and survivors in clean condition are less common than catalog frequency might suggest.
