Pick 19 is a transitional issue — Burundi had only separated from the Rwanda-Burundi monetary union in 1964, and these overprinted notes were a practical stopgap while the Banque de la République du Burundi established its own independent printing arrangements. The overprint converts an earlier note into post-separation legal tender without the expense or delay of commissioning entirely new designs.

1966 was also the year Michel Micombero's coup ended the monarchy, making this one of the last notes issued under the Kingdom of Burundi before the republic was formally proclaimed on November 28th.
