Suriname was still a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1957, and the Centrale Bank van Suriname had only been established four years earlier, in 1957 being among the earliest high-denomination issues under the new institution. At 1000 Gulden, this was the ceiling of the series — not a note that moved through ordinary trade.
Johan Enschedé en Zonen, the Haarlem security printer with roots in the early eighteenth century, produced the note. Their work for Dutch colonial and associated territories was extensive, and the quality of their intaglio printing is consistently reliable across the series.
