1000 Gulden

By 2000, Suriname's currency had been under severe inflationary pressure for nearly a decade — the gulden lost most of its value through the 1990s following years of economic mismanagement and the collapse of bauxite revenues. A 1000 gulden denomination, once substantial, had been rendered nearly trivial in purchasing power by the time this note entered circulation. The series was eventually swept away entirely when Suriname redenominated at 1000:1 in 2004, replacing the gulden with the Surinamese dollar.

Thomas De La Rue printed the note, though the watermark remains the sole listed security feature — a notably sparse specification for a high-denomination note from this period.
