When war broke out in August 1914, De Nederlandsche Bank faced an immediate run on gold and silver coin. These auxiliary notes — hulpbiljetten — were authorized under emergency legislation passed within days of Dutch mobilization, intended to relieve pressure on metallic reserves while the country watched its neighbors collapse into conflict. The Netherlands never entered the war, but the financial panic hit regardless.
The 1000 Gulden denomination made this one of the highest-value emergency instruments issued. Printed in Amsterdam under rushed conditions, circulation was brief — the series was withdrawn relatively quickly once confidence stabilized.
