P#39 replaced an earlier 1000 Kip design that had been in circulation since 1998, part of a gradual series refresh the Bank of the Lao PDR undertook through the 2000s as the kip stabilized following the severe inflation of 1997–1999, during which the currency lost roughly 80% of its value against the dollar. Giesecke & Devrient's Leipzig facility handled the print run — the same plant responsible for several other Southeast Asian issues of that period.
The security specification here is thin by contemporary standards: watermark only, with no security thread reported for this type.
