Romania's 1991 1000 Lei was issued during a period of rapid monetary deterioration — inflation had been suppressed under Ceaușescu through price controls and outright falsification of economic data, and once those controls collapsed after December 1989, the lei's purchasing power eroded quickly. This denomination, substantial at issue, became effectively trivial within a few years as inflation peaked above 300% annually in 1993.
The P#101A designation distinguishes a signature variety, a detail that matters more to specialists than the notes themselves suggest — the series ran with multiple signatory combinations as the bank's leadership changed during the post-communist restructuring.
