Moldova's first independent banknote series, of which this is the highest denomination, was introduced in 1992 to replace Soviet ruble coupons — the tranziție vouchers that had served as an awkward stopgap after the USSR's collapse. The series was designed domestically but printed by the Canadian Bank Note Company in Ottawa, an unusual choice for a small post-Soviet republic with few established international banking relationships.
The 1000 Lei denomination was controversial on release: annual inflation in Moldova ran above 1200% in 1993, meaning this note lost practical purchasing power almost immediately after printing.
