The Banco Nacional Ultramarino, founded in 1864, held a monopoly on note issue across Portugal's overseas territories, but this particular 1000 Réis issue circulated domestically in metropolitan Portugal — an unusual arrangement reflecting the bank's hybrid role as both a colonial and a mainland institution during the period when the Banco de Portugal had not yet consolidated exclusive issuing rights.
The series ran across more than a decade, which means specimens carry date ranges that can complicate precise attribution. Notes from the earlier part of the run predate significant reforms to Portuguese banking law in the 1880s.
