Obverse description Intaglio portrait of Sir Charles Gaëtan Duval QC (1930–1996) occupies the left half of the note against a multicolour guilloche underprint with ornate rosette patterns in orange and red. The bank title BANK OF MAURITIUS and the denomination Rs 1000 appear at the top in bold letterpress, with the legal tender clause and denomination spelled out in English, Tamil, and Hindi in the centre field. A holographic patch to the upper right carries an image of a temple tower, while a vignette of the figure of Justice and the Mauritian coat of arms appear to the right, accompanied by three signature lines labelled First Deputy Governor, Governor, and Second Deputy Governor with the issue year below.

Reverse description The central vignette presents an intaglio view of Le Réduit, the historic presidential residence, rendered in teal and dark blue tones against a pale lavender guilloche field bearing a large latent-image numeral 1000 on the left. The bank title BANK OF MAURITIUS and the denomination Rs 1000 are set at upper left and upper right respectively, with the value also expressed in Tamil script at lower right. A colour-shifting optically variable ink (OVI) disc element appears at lower left, and a red-and-teal denomination panel with the value in Hindi numeral script occupies the lower centre.
