The ₹1000 denomination was reintroduced in 2000 after a 23-year absence — the note had been demonetized in 1978 under the High Denomination Bank Notes (Demonetisation) Act, a measure aimed primarily at curbing black money hoarding. Its return reflected both inflation and the RBI's willingness to accept that high-value notes were practically unavoidable in a modernizing economy.
Two governors signed this series: Bimal Jalan, who served through 2003, and Y.V. Reddy, who succeeded him. The plate letter variant adds a minor but catalogable distinction within the Jalan-signed issues.
