Austria's postwar monetary reconstruction moved in stages, and this 1947 1000 Schilling sits at a particularly fraught moment: the Allied occupation was still in force, the country had not yet signed a State Treaty, and the National Bank was operating under four-power oversight. High-denomination notes of this period are sometimes found with control stamps or cancellations applied during the currency exchanges of 1945 and 1947 — two separate reform actions within three years — which occasionally complicates clean attribution of surviving examples.
Fritz Zerritsch der Jüngere was one of the more accomplished Viennese graphic artists of the interwar and early postwar period, known for precise figurative work. His involvement signals this was not a rushed emergency printing.
