Tanzania's 1990 currency reform consolidated the shilling series following years of inflation that had badly eroded purchasing power through the 1980s — the 1000 Shilingi denomination, essentially nonexistent in earlier issues, only became practical currency once smaller denominations had become nearly worthless for routine transactions. Thomas De La Rue printed the series under long-standing contract with the Bank of Tanzania, a relationship dating to the country's first post-independence notes in the 1960s.
The watermark is the sole security feature listed for this issue — a relatively sparse specification for a high-value note, reflecting the technological and budgetary constraints common to East African central bank contracts of the period.
