Additional information

Uzbekistan's som was redenominated in 1994 after the currency collapsed in the wake of Soviet dissolution, and again effectively reset by the introduction of ever-larger denominations through the 2010s — by 2020, the 1,000-som coin represented a unit that had shed zeros twice in a generation. The bimetallic format was adopted as counterfeiting pressure on high-denomination circulating coinage increased across Central Asia.
