To the left of the portrait, an engraved representation of the equestrian monument to Nicholas I in Saint Isaac's Square, Saint Petersburg, is shown in fine relief against the mirror-polished field. Nicholas I ruled Russia from 1825 until his death in 1855, his reign bookended by the Decembrist uprising at its start and the humiliating reversal of the Crimean War at its close. Mongolia's Bank has issued a long-running series of silver crowns commemorating historical world figures with little obvious connection to Mongolian history — Nicholas I among them. The KM#295 reference places this firmly within that collector-focused program, produced almost certainly at a European contract mint rather than domestically.
