Fiji's 12½ cent denomination is a direct consequence of the island's pre-decimal currency arithmetic, where the Spanish dollar and its fractional descendants still shaped everyday transactions in the 1870s. The figure 12½ cents equals one shilling in the Fijian dollar system of the time — a crossover value that made sense to a trading population dealing simultaneously in British sterling and dollar-based coinage.
Cession to Britain came in October 1874, making this 1873 government issue one of the last paper instruments produced under the independent Kingdom of Fiji. Its survival rate is extremely low.
