| Beschrijving keerzijde | A stag standing and grazing to the right, its head lowered toward the ground line, rendered in a naturalistic style with fine musculature. The animal, sacred to Artemis the principal deity of Ephesos, occupies the central field. The Greek legend ANAΞIΛAΣ, identifying the magistrate Anaxilas responsible for the issue, is inscribed in the lower field or exergue beneath the stag. The reverse type directly evokes the cult of Artemis Ephesia, whose sanctuary at Ephesos was among the most celebrated in the ancient world. |
