The Sabaean Kingdom issued coinage largely in imitation of Athenian types, part of a broader Arabian practice of adopting Greek monetary conventions to facilitate trade along the incense routes connecting southern Arabia to the Mediterranean world. These fractional pieces — the smallest denominations in the Sabaean series — circulated primarily in commercial rather than tribute contexts, passing through the hands of frankincense and myrrh merchants operating out of Marib.
SNG ANS 6 #277 places this piece within a tightly documented sequence, though precise die studies for the fractional Sabaean series remain incomplete.
