Grenada's 2 Bits of 1814 belongs to a class of provisional coinage born from the chronic small-change shortage that plagued British Caribbean colonies throughout the Napoleonic Wars period. Spanish colonial reales, cut and countermarked, circulated alongside purpose-struck pieces as local authorities scrambled to maintain a functioning money supply. KM#5 is among the scarcer of these colonial issues — Grenada's output was modest compared to larger islands — and genuine examples are frequently confused with contemporary pieces from neighboring colonies that employed similar denominations and silver standards.
