Argentina's provinces have issued their own quasi-monetary tokens intermittently since the currency crises of the early 2000s, when federal peso shortages forced local governments to circulate provincial bonds and scrip as functional change. La Rioja's bocado issues follow that tradition of sub-national monetary improvisation, though the 2024 series arrives in a different crisis register — chronic peso devaluation rather than outright liquidity collapse.
