The Danish East India Company's Tranquebar settlement on the Coromandel Coast was the operational base for this issue, one of the smallest denominations struck for Company use in India. The cash was a local Tamil unit of account, and the Company adopted it pragmatically to facilitate petty trade in a market where European monetary conventions were irrelevant. Frederik III, in whose name this was struck, never exercised any meaningful authority over Tranquebar — the Company held its own charter and conducted its Indian affairs largely independent of Copenhagen's direct supervision.
