By 1936, Lithuania had been operating under Antanas Smetona's authoritarian regime for over a decade, following his coup of December 1926. Low-denomination bronze coinage of this period saw limited mintage runs, and the 1936 2 Centai is among the scarcer dates in the interwar Lithuanian series — production was winding down as the centas coinage approached its practical end before Soviet occupation in 1940 rendered the entire currency obsolete.
