The Dominican Republic's 1878 essai coinage was produced in Paris — almost certainly at the Monnaie de Paris — as part of a broader proposal for a new national coinage series that was never adopted for circulation. The country had been through two Spanish annexations, a brief Haitian reunification, and chronic fiscal instability by this point, and foreign mints regularly solicited small nations with pattern proposals that went nowhere.
The two KM references reflect distinct die or metal variations within the same essai program. Neither entered production.
