Nicaragua's 1887 copper pattern series was produced in anticipation of a coinage reform that never fully materialized on schedule. The KM#Pn3 designation places this among a small cluster of pattern issues from that year, struck most likely at a European facility — probably Heaton's Birmingham mint, which handled much of Central America's coinage during this period — as sample pieces for government approval.
Patterns of this type rarely entered the hands of more than a few treasury officials.
