This issue belongs to a transitional period in Uruguayan monetary policy — the early 1950s saw the country's economy begin its long deterioration under the strain of post-war commodity price collapses and mounting public sector deficits. Small copper-nickel centésimo coins were struck in quantity precisely because inflation was still modest enough that they retained practical utility, a situation that would become untenable within a decade.
