Obverse description Right-facing draped bust of José Gervasio Artigas, national hero and founding father of Uruguay, modelled in high relief with naturalistic rendering of his characteristic curled hair and military collar. The engraver's initials 'HP' appear in the lower field beneath the truncation. The circular legend 'REPÚBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY' runs along the upper periphery, while the name '• ARTIGAS •' is inscribed horizontally in the lower field, with the date '1960' immediately below.

Uruguay's 1960 coinage program coincided with the early deterioration of the peso under mounting inflation pressure — a crisis that would ultimately require a full monetary redenomination in 1975, when the nuevo peso replaced the old at 1,000 to one. Small-denomination coins like this 2 centésimos piece were among the first casualties of that slow collapse, rendered economically irrelevant within a decade of issue.
