Uruguay's 1960 coinage program coincided with the early deterioration of the peso under mounting inflation pressure — a crisis that would ultimately require a full monetary redenomination in 1975, when the nuevo peso replaced the old at 1,000 to one. Small-denomination coins like this 2 centésimos piece were among the first casualties of that slow collapse, rendered economically irrelevant within a decade of issue.
