Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations, this coin appeared just four years after Kuwait's liberation from Iraqi occupation — a period in which the UN Security Council's authorization of Operation Desert Storm carried particular weight for Kuwaiti authorities. The timing was not incidental. Kuwait had more reason than most member states to treat the anniversary as something beyond ceremonial.
Struck to the same 28.28g/.925 silver specification used widely by the Royal Mint for international commemorative programs of this period, the piece was almost certainly produced under contract rather than at a domestic facility.
