Obverse description The obverse features a stylized Zimbabwe Bird, the national emblem, rendered in profile and facing left at center. This iconic soapstone carving, originating from the ruins of Great Zimbabwe and associated with the Monomotapa Empire and the ancestral Gokomere-Shona culture, dates to approximately the 12th–14th centuries. The legend ZIMBABWE arcs along the upper periphery, with the date 1997 positioned below the central device. The field is plain, and the design is executed in a clean, sculptural style appropriate to a circulation issue.

Reverse description The reverse depicts a Pangolin (order Pholidota, family Manidae) in profile, its characteristic overlapping keratinous scales rendered in fine relief, with the animal's body curled slightly as is typical of the species. The Pangolin, found across tropical regions of Africa and Southeast Asia, is presented as the central device occupying the majority of the field. The denomination $2 appears in the lower portion of the field in bold Latin numerals. The composition is naturalistic in style, consistent with Zimbabwe's wildlife-themed coinage series of this period.
