The Anguilla Regatta, held annually since 1964, grew directly out of the island's political turbulence — the event was partly conceived as a way to assert a distinct Anguillan identity during the period leading up to the 1967 rebellion against the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla federation. What began as local racing between working sloops has since become one of the Caribbean's most distinctive sailing festivals, built around traditional wooden boats rather than modern racing hulls.
The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank issues collector silver for member territories on rotation; Anguilla's turn producing thematic pieces has been infrequent, making this among the few ECCB issues to treat specifically Anguillan subject matter.
