The denomination numeral 2 appears prominently in the upper central field, with DOLLARS inscribed in large block letters beneath it, and the date 1865 occupying the lower central area. The surrounding legend, separated from the central design by a beaded inner border, reads TWO HUNDRED CENTS along the upper arc and ONE HUNDRED PENCE along the lower arc, underscoring the tri-currency equivalency concept of this pattern issue. The same decorative loop ornaments seen on the obverse appear at the left and right margins. The outer border is formed by a continuous milled denticular rim. |

Only two specimens of this pattern are confirmed to exist. The Newfoundland government was exploring a domestic gold coinage in 1865 — the colony had its own currency act and a genuine interest in gold-denominated coins given the presence of local gold deposits — but the $2 denomination was never approved for circulation. The decision effectively killed Newfoundland's only serious attempt at a gold coinage until the sovereign-weight $2 piece finally reached production in 1865 under revised terms, making this pattern both a dead end and a direct ancestor of what followed.
