Carlos III's monetary reform of 1772 mandated a new bust coinage — the "busto" type — replacing the cob-style macuquinas that had dominated Spanish American minting for nearly two centuries. Lima was slower than Mexico City to fully transition, and early Lima busto pieces from 1772–1773 show inconsistent die alignment and variable portrait quality as the mint adjusted to the new standards.
The KM#80 series spans the assayer marks of several Lima officials, with pieces bearing the "MJ" assayer combination among the scarcer dates.
