Obverse description Depicted at centre is a cross-shaped anthropomorphic idol of the Chalcolithic period (circa 3000 B.C.), discovered at Pomos in the district of Paphos, Cyprus, and representative of the island's prehistoric artistic tradition. The idol is rendered in stylised form with outstretched arms, occupying the central field of the coin. The country name appears in Greek (ΚΥΠΡΟΣ) to the left and in Turkish (KIBRIS) to the right of the idol, reflecting Cyprus's bilingual heritage. The mint year appears at the bottom of the design. The overall composition exemplifies the Cypriot national series' emphasis on the island's ancient civilisation and archaeological heritage.
