Monaco's early euro issues were produced in tiny quantities — the Principality struck coins primarily for collector sets rather than circulation, resulting in mintages so low that even circulated examples are scarce. The 2001 issue had a mintage of just 60,023 pieces across all formats, a figure that would be considered a proof run by any larger mint's standards.
Rainier III had ruled since 1949 and died in April 2005, making this a short-lived type superseded almost immediately by the Albert II series.
