| 表面の説明 | The obverse depicts a panoramic cityscape of Valletta, the capital city of Malta, founded in 1566 by Grand Master Jean de Valette and formally established as the island's capital in 1571. The design references the city's outstanding universal value as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 1980) and its distinction as both the southernmost and smallest capital city within the European Union. The inscriptions VALLETTA and MALTA appear in the field alongside the year of issue 2026, rendered in Latin lettering. |

Valletta has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 1980, recognized for one of the highest concentrations of historic buildings per square kilometer anywhere in Europe — a density owing directly to the Knights of St. John, who built the city from scratch following the Great Siege of 1565. Malta's €2 commemorative program has drawn heavily on this architectural patrimony, and Valletta, as the fortified capital founded by Grand Master Jean de Valette, is an obvious subject. The city turned 450 years old in 2016, the same year it was designated European Capital of Culture for 2018.
