The 1955 Hungarian 2 Forint belongs to a stabilization-era series introduced after the catastrophic 1946 hyperinflation — the worst recorded in history, during which the pengő was replaced by the forint at a ratio of 400 octillion pengő to one. By 1955, the forint was a decade old but the economy remained tightly centralized under Soviet-aligned planning, and low-denomination notes like this one circulated heavily under artificial price controls that kept small change in constant demand.
Cotton-composition paper was standard for Hungarian issues of this period, sourced domestically through state-controlled production.
