The VOC's kepings were struck for circulation in Ceylon and along the Malabar Coast, where the company maintained trading posts and needed low-denomination copper for local market transactions. By 1783, the VOC was in serious financial decline — rampant corruption, shareholder dividend payments funded by borrowing, and losses from the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War had left the company effectively insolvent. It would be nationalized by the Batavian Republic just thirteen years later.
Pridmore's attribution (Pr#9) places this among a small set of documented die marriages for the 1783 issue.
