The VOC struck these kepings at Batavia for circulation in the pepper-producing regions of Sumatra's west coast, where the Company maintained trading posts at Padang and Tapanuli. By the mid-1780s the VOC was in terminal financial decline — accumulated debt from decades of corruption, smuggling losses, and the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War (1780–1784) had gutted the organization — and these would be among the last copper issues the Company managed to produce before its charter lapsed in 1799.
