The "heavier typeface" designation distinguishes this from the earlier P#12 printing, a subtle but consistent typographic difference in the serial number and denomination lettering that makes side-by-side comparison the only reliable identification method. Note Printing Australia had produced the earlier version as well, so the change reflects a press or plate modification rather than a switch in contractor.
Papua New Guinea's kina was introduced in 1975 at independence, replacing the Australian dollar at parity — a rate that made reasonable sense at the time but diverged sharply over subsequent decades.
