Iceland's postwar coinage of 1946 came on the heels of the country's formal declaration of independence from Denmark in June 1944, making these early Republic-era issues the first coins struck under full Icelandic sovereignty rather than as a Danish dependency. The transition was administratively abrupt — Iceland had already been self-governing in most practical matters since Danish occupation by Germany in 1940 effectively severed the relationship.
Struck at the Copenhagen Mint despite the political break, a contractual arrangement that continued for practical reasons well into the Republic period.
