| 正面描述 | The elaborate coat of arms of Romania occupies the central field, featuring a quartered shield displaying the emblems of Wallachia, Moldavia, Oltenia, and Dobruja, surmounted by a princely crown and supported by two rampant lions holding ermine-lined mantles. A ribbon banner below the shield bears the motto legend in three segments. The engraver's signature STERN appears at the lower left, and the date 1872 is inscribed in large numerals at the bottom of the field. |

Romania's 1872 coinage was minted before the country had formally established its own monetary infrastructure, with production contracted to foreign facilities — the Brussels mint struck much of the early Lei series. The 1872 2 Lei pattern pieces were produced as proposals during the consolidation of Romanian monetary policy following the adoption of the Latin Monetary Union standard, to which Romania aligned itself without ever becoming a full member.
Pattern survivorship from this period is genuinely thin.
