Malta's 2 Liri note had an unusually long run for a denomination of its size — thirteen years in active circulation before the country's 2008 euro adoption rendered the entire lira series obsolete almost overnight. The Central Bank of Malta gave holders just one year to exchange lira banknotes at face value, after which the notes became non-convertible, a relatively short redemption window compared to neighbouring eurozone entrants.
Thomas De La Rue's security thread integration on this series was a mid-run upgrade, retrofitted to address counterfeiting concerns that had emerged with earlier P#45 printings lacking the feature.
