Le Lupi is a complementary currency launched in the Centre region of Belgium, designed to circulate locally and encourage spending within the community rather than leaking into broader supply chains. The name and wolf motif draw on the regional identity of the area around La Louvière — "louve" being French for she-wolf. These currencies have no legal tender status and depend entirely on voluntary merchant participation.
The hologram is unusual for a local complementary issue, where most European schemes rely on simpler security measures or none at all. Whether this reflects genuine anti-counterfeiting concern or a deliberate signal of institutional seriousness is an open question.
