Obverse description Cast copper cash coin of round form with a central square hole, the field displaying four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion around the perforation. Reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left, the legend reads 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo), identifying this as currency of the Sangpyongcheong (Directorate of Ever-Normal Goods). The characters are rendered in a bold, formal script with raised strokes against a flat field, bounded by a raised inner rim around the square hole and a broad flat outer rim. The coin displays characteristic patination of aged bronze, with areas of green cuprite oxidation consistent with burial or extended circulation.
