Saint Helena and Ascension issued its own decimal coinage beginning in 1984, a administrative curiosity given that Ascension Island had never previously shared a currency issuer with Saint Helena. The pairing reflected British colonial consolidation rather than any geographic or economic logic — the two islands lie roughly 1,300 kilometers apart with no meaningful trade relationship.
